Syafiq Samad “The Slasher”

“THE SLASHER”

22-year old Syafiq Samad, aka ‘The Slasher’ currently holds a record 4-1-0 in the regional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) scene. For the uninitiated, this means he’s won 4 and lost 1 in his professional fighting career but here’s the impressive bit – his wins have all been via TKO, KO and submissions. He’s also the first Singaporean to win in a Pacific X-treme Combat (PXC) event, arguably one of Asia’s biggest MMA competitions.

“TO BE A WORLD CHAMPION”

“My dream is to be a World Champion,” he said, catching his breath after a hard session of pad and mitt work under the tutelage of his trainer and mentor, Arvind ‘The Juggernaut’ Lalwani, a local legend in his own right. It was the way he said it. No hollow bravado; just polite and endearing – the kind of athlete you’ll root for.

He emphasized how the sport has taught him about discipline, commitment, moral values and most importantly, humility. “Fight sport and myself – we’re inseparable,” he quipped.

Syafiq’s foray into MMA wasn’t inspired by watching his favorite athlete in action- he took up the sport because of an event that almost took his life. Mistaking him for another person, a group of assailants hacked him brutally, almost killing him. The episode ignited his interest in fight sport and ‘The Slasher’ was born.

“I love what I’m doing and that’s all that matters. I’ll keep putting the hours and reaching for the stars because as they say, even if you don’t quite grasp one and fall, you’ll land on clouds and that’s not so bad, is it?”
